Character Information

Name: Shin
Canon: Angels of Death: Episode.0
OU/AU/CRAU/OC: Antumbra CRAU

World info: America, early 2010’s. Pretty much what you’d expect for a town in the New England area, but you may run into some particularly nasty characters if you’re not careful… And do take care if you approach a certain building near the local church. That’s where Reverend Gray is setting up his experiment, and if you’re not careful you may find yourself having to survive his “angels…”

Not that Shin has any plans to give anyone tours of his world.
History: Canon history writeup | Antumbra CRAU info

Canon point: Post Antumbra, after he agrees to help Eddie stakeout the graveyard in his world.
Age: Mid 20’s? I put him as 26 in his previous game.

Personality:
Shin’s a talented carpenter who puts a lot of love and care into his work. He fancies himself an artist who feels most fulfilled when he’s given the chance to indulge in his hobby…

There’s just one problem. He’s also a remorseless serial killer who incorperates body parts from his victims into his furniture. He’s done a decent job of hiding his twisted work from the authorities, preferring to work in dark rooms away from the public, but he will drop the act with a flourish around potential victims and fellow killers. After all, he also takes time to appreciate the efforts of other craftsmen and will attempt to share artistic opinions if he gets the chance.

That probably comes from the fact he spent most of his life as a twin. The two of them were so inseperable, it was nearly impossible for even them to tell eachother apart at times. However, after Gray rejected them for their “twisted dependance”, the two began to turn against each other. After all, one drafted the designs and the other actually built the furniture. They began to wonder who was less skilled, and after more prodding from Danny, Cathy and Lucy, one twin was driven to kill the other. Not the first time the man who came to be known as “Shin” acted without really considering the consequences. He has a tendency to make rash descisions when he’s feeling particularly stressed or inspired…

Still, the death of his brother may not have completely solved his codependency issues. He came to the building implying he was two “incomplete” men who have become one “complete” man, and yet he seeks validation from his murderous peers at times and worries about losing motivation when he misplaces his sketchbook. He doesn’t seem to realize this about himself… In fact, the man’s so mysterious there are things about himself that even he doesn’t understand.

At least there are some lows even he refuses to stoop to. For instance, he finds no beauty in defiling bodies that have already been buried, and in fact finds the act of sloppily butchering the corpse disgusting. Besides, what's the point of using someone else's work in your own work?

Character changes:
Antumbra Changes: The events of Antumbra have turned Shin’s worldview on its head, and he’s still trying to cope with it all. The constant reminders and an accidental pep talk from Hyoubu have made Shin realize that killing his brother to join a murder club wasn’t the best idea. While he understands this was a mistake he can’t undo and must move on, he’s better able to properly mourn his loss and no longer thinks of himself as two people who somehow became one.

He’s also more likely to question things that seem too good to be true after his interactions with Lucrezia and the aforementioned talk with Hyoubu. Why did he blindly accept Danny’s invitation and gaslighting? Why did he try to spite Lucrezia through self sacrifice? He isn’t quite sure, and he’s developed a sense of self loathing for acting like such a fool. He’s also developed a vengeful streak and will merrily plot the demise of anyone he believes to have gravely wronged or betrayed him.

That being said, he tries to be a little more careful. After all, being pulled into a murdergame involving the supernatural has opened his eyes to quite a few things; There are other universes out there that can be much different from his own. Souls literally exist and are able to be damaged. Demons also exist and live on Faustian bargains. Most importantly, Shin is no longer entirely human. There are two things he fears now, losing what’s left of his soul and becoming a mindless beast that rends its prey to shreds with no rhyme or reason.

Of course, he got to keep his power to summon a doppelganger of himself which probably got an upgrade post-endgame. However, Shin finds having a soulless clone for a familiar uncanny and he’d rather not risk becoming a Void again, so he limits its use to whenever he deems it necessary. Probably a good thing, since he doesn’t fully understand what he’s become. Other developments include getting into painting and going vegetarian… Sort of.

Badgernet changes: Badgernet gives him a connection to people who would understand what it’s like to interact with other universes. He’d be very careful not to reveal too much of his murderous ways to the public, lest he’d be chased out of other worlds or worse, but perhaps he may open up to similarly twisted killers… It’s a strange sort of double life, showing one side of himself to others in his world and another side to Badgernet users, but he’ll manage… Or at least, he’d have an easier time of managing it if it weren’t for the hiccups potentially blowing his cover.

Castmates would also complicate matters in ways that I’d be interested in playing out. I know there’s a Ray who may app, and since Shin would be long dead by her canonpoint he might end up learning about the fate of the building if he gets comfortable enough to ask. Other castmates that Shin knows about would cause him to worry about having his double life exposed until he realizes they’re most likely from a timeline where Shin didn’t get dragged to another world for a murdergame. What happens after that depends on CR. I am more than willing to talk things out with castmates if needed.

Capabilities:
  • As an artist, Shin has plenty of experience with taxidermy and furniture making. He can sketch out designs and assemble the furniture. He’s also taken up painting recently.
  • As an In-Birth, Shin has the power to create a clone of himself. The clone itself is not sentient and only exists to follow basic commands. Shin’s not too fond of having a soulless doppelganger for a servant and he does not want to risk becoming a Void again, so he purposefully limits himself in its use. More detailed information on this is in the CRAU info page linked above.
  • Another In-Birth ability he isn’t aware of: His vessel (body) is stronger and more durable than a normal human’s. However, if he takes too much damage he’ll end up in a Zero State where he’s essentially brought back down to normal human.
Sample: TDM Toplevel, TDM thread with Yosuke (CW: Dismemberment, blood, and implied body horror)

    Notes:
Shin’s a rather problematic character full of content warnings, mainly concerning body horror. While I try to make sure I properly label when those matters may come up in RP and make the permissions post, is there anything elseI should keep in mind?

Also, Shin’s canon is still in progress. How should I handle canon updates in a game like this?
